Links Course 9 Hole

Welcoming Members and Visitors

Welcome to Sutton Golf Club which we believe occupies a truly unique place in Irish golf. A few years ago, a leading Irish golf writer wrote a major article about Sutton in a national newspaper under the headline “The Greatest Little Club in the Year”. It’s a sentiment that many would agree with.

The “little” in the headline acknowledges the fact that Sutton is a nine-hole links golf course but is a club and course that punches well above its weight. Which is why Sutton Golf Club is known wherever golf is played in the world today.

Set in a remarkable location, beside the Irish Sea, Sutton has a remarkable history, a history that is being built on every year. One of the oldest courses in Ireland, it will celebrate 150 years in existence in 2040. Incredible!

And the equally good news is that Sutton provides the same warm Sutton welcome for all – members, guests and visitors alike. We look forward to welcoming you.

Founded in 1890 early records show that Sutton was a favoured venue for golfers from the earliest days. The fact that the railway stopped at Sutton was a major bonus. The club quickly established itself and a first Irish senior international Averell Digges La Touche, was celebrated in 1904. A first inter club victory, the winning of the Junior Cup was to follow in 1906.

Almost from the outset the club has had a strong women’s section and this was reflected in 1911 when both Rhoda and Georgina Lauder were both selected for the Irish Women’s Senior International team – the first ever sisters to play for Ireland.

Undoubtedly the golden age for Sutton began in 1946 with the winning of the Barton Shield. From 1946 to 1963 Sutton was by far the dominant club in Ireland winning nine All Ireland titles and a further 26 Leinster titles – a phenomenal achievement. During that time the club featured consistently on the Irish international team – on one occasion providing three members of that team.
