A surprising number of great houses around Fingal have left a legacy of gracious gardens, many of which are open to the public.
Ardgillan Castle and Gardens is set in 194 acres of spectacular parklands and gardens. The walled garden was originally a Victorian-styled kitchen garden that used to supply the fruit, vegetables and cut flower requirements to the house, The 1 hectare (2.27 acres) walled garden was replanted in the 1990’s using a plant list compiled by the Shackleton Family as a baseline for the continued management of the plant collection.
Newbridge House and Farm is set in 370 acres of scenic parkland. The traditional working farm is a delight for all ages, with rare breeds of livestock, open pastures, and interactive experiences. The walled garden dates back to the 1700s and was meticulously designed to provide a sheltered microclimate cultivating a bounty of fresh produce for the Cobbe family.
The Shackleton Gardens in Clonsilla were created by David Shackleton over 200 years ago. They measure 1.5 acres in size and are home to a wide range of rare and exotic plants including an important collection of herbaceous perennials and include a Vine House, Potting Shed, Hot House, Hot Beds and Formal Pond.
