Swords Castle

Swords Castle boasts 800 years of history

Swords Castle has stood in the centre of Swords since 1200 AD. It was built by the first Norman Archbishop of Dublin and is a National Monument, being one of the best surviving examples of an Archbishop’s Palace in Ireland. A quirky aspect of the restored Chapel is a series of carved heads in the roof timbers – faces of people working on the original site. The extensive complex of buildings on over an acre is roughly in the form of a pentagon and is enclosed by a perimeter wall of 260 metres. It adjoins the lovely riverside Town Park.

Community Archaeologist, Christine Baker has compiled an accessible guide (click here to view) to introduce visitors to this fascinating site.

Admission is free and tours are available on request.

The castle plays host to events, concerts and a seasonal Fingal Food Market.
