Step Into the Past: A Family Adventure at Ardgillan Castle

Looking for a fun and memorable family day out in Fingal? Ardgillan Castle and Gardens in Balbriggan has launched a brand-new immersive tour designed with families in mind—and it’s a charming blend of history, storytelling, and hands-on fun.

This engaging 30–40 minute experience invites visitors into the elegant world of the Taylor family, who lived at Ardgillan for generations. But this is no ordinary tour—it’s a journey guided by the voice of the past.

Meet Lady Marianne
Your host is Lady Marianne St. Leger Taylor, the castle’s 19th-century matriarch. A well-known socialite who kept detailed daily diaries, her personal stories shape the entire experience.

Now, her voice guides visitors through the home, sharing personal reflections on everything from busy household routines to lively social gatherings—and the ups and downs of raising her seven children. These vivid, first-hand accounts transform the tour into something intimate and authentic, as though you’re stepping directly into her world.

Explore and Discover
The tour leads you through the castle’s most fascinating spaces, from the grand entrance hall to the dining room, drawing room, billiards room, butler’s pantry, and even the bustling basement kitchens.

Along the way, informative panels provide extra insights, while hidden doors add a touch of mystery and intrigue.

A Tour for the Senses
Ardgillan’s immersive touches brings the past vividly to life. Expect:

  • “Smellometers” recreating scents from the past
  • Rich soundscapes, from gentle dining-room chatter to lively kitchen clatter

Fun for Younger Visitors
Kids will love the Discovery Nook, where they can dress up in period costumes, solve puzzles, and play games. There’s also a fun activity trail, including a search for hidden “chicks” around the castle—a playful nod to the Taylor children.

Plan Your Visit
The self-guided audio tour is available in English, Irish, German, Spanish, French, and Polish, accessed via QR code (bring your own headphones). A transcript option is also available.

Ardgillan Castle is open daily from 10am to 4pm, with free parking on site, plus a café and craft shop to round out your visit. Leave time to explore the vast 194 acre estate and visit the Argillan Artists Collective.
